Seagate Technology Plc (Seagate) has launched a new 3.5 10 terabyte (TB) hard disk drive that will enable data centers to address their requirements driven by the increase of private and public cloud storage. Seagate, recognized as a world leader in disk hardware, suggests the new drive merges “high capacity with the industry’s lowest power and weight available in a 10TB drive”. It has already been selected by a number of leading companies, including Huawei and Alibaba.
Seagate’s new drive brings together seven platters and 14 heads with drive seals in helium “to create a turbulence-free, quiet environment” which reduces friction and platter resistance. The drive has the industry’s lowest power to terabyte ratio and offers an additional 25% density to allow businesses to increase the number of petabytes of storage available per rack.
